The National Association for the Advancement of Animal Science (NAAAS) focuses on advocating for an increased federal investment in the animal sciences. Comprised of leaders from animal, dairy and poultry science departments from universities across the United States, the group addresses the importance of animal agriculture research and the need to improve the overall federal funding for this research.
As the world’s population grows and natural resources become limited, animal agriculture research is necessary now more than ever to improve efficiency in order to continue providing safe and abundant food supplies for the growing global community. Demand for food is expected to increase from 70 to 100 percent by 2050. Animals will and must play a critical role in meeting this demand.
The overall level of public funding for agricultural research has been stagnant for the past 30 years. NAAAS is working to reverse the trend in declining public funding and to reiterate the economic and social value of animal agriculture.
